About Thermocouple Wires

What are Thermocouple Wires & Cables?

Thermocouple wires are specialized cables made from two different metal alloys that generate a voltage proportional to temperature difference. This phenomenon, known as the Seebeck effect, enables accurate temperature measurement across a wide range of industrial applications.

As a trusted thermocouple wires supplier in Uttarakhand, Polytef Trader offers a comprehensive range including thermocouple grade wires, extension wires, and compensating cables in all standard types (J, K, T, E, N, R, S, B) with various insulation options to meet diverse industrial requirements.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries about thermocouple wires

Thermocouple grade wire is used at the measuring junction and has the highest accuracy with tighter tolerances. Extension wire is made from the same alloys but with relaxed tolerances and is used to extend the thermocouple circuit to the instrument. Both have the same EMF characteristics but thermocouple grade is more expensive due to higher purity.

Selection depends on temperature range, environment, and accuracy requirements. Type K is most versatile for general use (-200°C to +1260°C). Type J is good for vacuum/inert atmospheres. Type T is best for cryogenic and food applications. For high temperatures above 1300°C, noble metal types (R, S, B) are recommended. Contact us for application-specific guidance.

Compensating cable is made from different, less expensive alloys that match the EMF characteristics of the thermocouple over a limited temperature range (typically 0-200°C). Use compensating cables for long runs where the cable won't be exposed to high temperatures to reduce costs. For high-temperature environments along the cable path, use extension wire instead.

Correct polarity is critical for accurate temperature measurement. Reversing the polarity will give incorrect readings. The positive (+) and negative (-) legs must be connected correctly throughout the circuit. Color coding helps identify polarity - always verify the color code standard (IEC or ANSI) being used in your system.
